week 3 D-2

1      In my opinion, I believe that punishing and disciplining a child means different things to different people. One form of punishment to one parent could mean disciplining to another. This can be a difficult subject to some parents, because they don’t want others telling them how to raise their children. I don’t believe abusive parents say they are merely teaching strict discipline. Being too harsh on a child can lead to problems for a child growing up. When I think of punishing a child, the first thing that pops into my head is a parent yelling or being physical with their child. Punishing is a strong word, and in I believe it is worse than disciplining. When I think of disciplining, I think of a parent talking to their child about an issue and trying to solve it in a compassionate way. Punishing to me makes me think of pain and being hurt, or belittled. But with disciplining, it’s not as harsh.  I believe that parents overstep their parental authority when they are beating their child severely. A spanking here and there never hurt anyone, but a beating is definitely crossing the line.
